Bolognese dogs, are a dwarf form of the Maltese dogs of the spaniel family and, together with pugs, were the most popular lapdogs of the gallant age.
The Frankenthal models were copied from a Meissen Bolognese hound modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775) in around 1743-44, (Andres-Acevedo 2023, vol. 2, p. 277).
A pair of Frankenthal models from the Kunstgewerbemuseum der Stadt Köln are dated to 1760 (Erichsen-Firle 1975, p. 71, no. 54), but Barbara Beaucamp-Markowsky illustrates two later stoneware models taken from the Frankenthal moulds and notes that two Frankenthal porcelain moulds for the model can be identified as dating from around 1766; the catalogue of moulds lists two models of ‘Sitting Poodles’, which were also described as ‘Bolognese Dogs’. (Beaucamp-Markowsky 2008, pp. 592 & 593).
