A SAINT-CLOUD ORMOLU-MOUNTED TOBACCO JAR AND COVER

with gold paillon decoration
Circa 1730
13.8 cm high

Applied with die-stamped gold ornaments of military trophies, classical landscape vignettes, children, birds and flowers. The gilt metal mounts are finely tooled with scrolls and birds. This along with the two other known examples of the form, are the most substantial and richly decorated pieces in this rare technique.[i]

From the collection of Mme Thalman, published in Alfassa and Guerin in 1931. Present whereabouts unknown[ii]

Condition:
Some crazing to the glaze surface, which probably occurred during the firing on of the paillons, old restoration to rim under mount.
