Chinoiserie decoration on continental European milchglas is surprisingly rare, and the decoration on this vase is of a much higher quality than normally found. Dr Rainer Rückert published a vase on a high stepped foot in the Bayerische Nationalmuseum with fairly crude chinoiserie decoration in a cartouche which he dated to 1730-40 and suggested was from Thuringia[1].
This oviform shape loosely follows that of a ‘Transitional’ Chinese vase of the 17th century. The decoration echoes the chinoiseries popularised by Meissen in the 1720s and 30s, but is more painterly. The baroque forms of the blue and white vases, being transported by boat, are reminiscent of the faience of Dresden and Berlin.
