A GILT METAL MOUNTED MEISSEN GLOBULAR TEAPOT

A GILT METAL MOUNTED MEISSEN GLOBULAR TEAPOT

Circa 1725-28
11.7 cm high, 17.8 cm across
Blue crossed swords mark in underglaze blue
The mount on the spout with a control mark, probably for Paris 1756-1762

Painted with two fanciful landscapes within quatrefoil cartouches formed of panels of Böttger lustre and laub und bandelwerk. The landscapes combine elements of East Asia with classical Western scenes inhabited by a range of figures from distant lands.

The painting is of exceptional delicacy and full of fantasy. The painting on a KPM marked teapot by the same distinctive hand in the Carabelli collection has been attributed to Johann George Heintze by Dr Ulrich Pietsch.[1]

Condition:
Some slight rubbing and wear to the gilding. The teapot with two very small chips to the upper rim.  Some tarnish and flaking to the gilding on the spout where the mounts made contact.

Provenance:
Anonymous sale; Sotheby’s, London, 10 March 1970, lot 19

Robert G. Vater Collection
