Dishes of this type are often attributed to the circle of the Castelli potter Francesco Grue (1618-1673), but Guido Donatone, the great scholar of Neapolitan ceramics, describes rather similar pieces as castellano-napolotane and suggest that some were made by Castelli potters who had migrated from the Abruzzo to Naples[i].
The scene of a huntsman riding to hounds in pursuit of deer is perhaps loosely based on the engravings of Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630).
